Far Out Games

These styleframes were created as part of School of Motion’s course “Illustration for Motion”. We were tasked with creating a concept and styleframes for a 30 second promotional video for a limited edition retro playing cards set by "Far Out Games" to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The concept should be lively and playful and transport us back to the 1960s.

Concept/Animation & Storyboard

As we were given the 1960s as theme and an existing voiceover I started by researching various mediums from the 60s like magazines, advertisements, vintage objects, etc. and building a moodboard based on that time period to inspire my illustrations. The frames have to convey that this card game can be played everywhere – from waiting around to while watching TV. Today's card players should be pulled in and get excited about buying the limited edition!

Style

I decided to go for a very colourful yet simple style on a paper texture. It was challenging to make sure that the frames were based on the 1960s but with a modern twist. To achieve this look I went with black outlines, filled with bold colours that really pop in combination with a muted, warm background. I went with "flowy", round shaped patterns that were seen a lot in this time period and created more of a 2D, flat look.
